Biography

Kristin is an attorney in Taft's Intellectual Property practice group. Her practice focuses on trademark clearance, trademark prosecution and enforcement, trademark litigation, copyrights and various IP infringement matters, as well as WIPO UDRP matters. She advises clients on protecting their brands and proprietary information, while providing guidance regarding brand development, clearance, registration, and maintenance for intellectual property portfolios, including trademarks, copyrights, domain names, and social media, in addition to handling TTAB and litigation matters. Prior to law school, Kristin worked for the Chicago Bears and at a large corporate Chicago firm doing marketing and business development work. Prior to joining Taft as an associate, she was a summer associate with the firm and a law clerk for the Indiana Office of the Attorney General in the Consumer Protection Division. She also was a law clerk for Honorable Barbara P. Gorman at the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas. Kristin obtained her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Dayton School of Law (UDSL) where she was elected publication editor of the UDSL Law Review, was a finalist in the Walter H. Rice Moot Court Competition and was awarded Runner-Up Best Brief Award of Fordham Law School's Irving R. Kaufman Memorial Securities Law Moot Court Competition. Kristin was also nominated and selected for the UDSL Leadership Honors Program and was awarded a full-tuition, merit-based scholarship. Additionally, Kristin served on the honor counsel, was a dean's fellow and participated in the student mentor program. She earned her bachelor's degree from Loyola University Chicago graduating cum laude.

Abstract

Ransomware events are affecting companies of all sizes and industries. With no signs of slowing down, this interactive presentation is effectively an "anatomy of a ransomware attack," and will highlight the legal, practical, and operational risks ransomware poses to organizations, how you can prepare companies for a ransomware attack, and what the regulatory and business landscape looks like when you are hit with a ransomware attack. The presentation will also cover the legal risks and procedures surrounding state AG investigations, civil litigation, and OFAC due diligence. Other topics include proper notification of employees, customers, third-party vendors, and insurance carriers.

Biography

Zach’s practice focuses on privacy and data security. Specifically, Zach assists clients in the areas of privacy compliance, data governance and guidance in the aftermath of an information security event, including data breach. Zach has experience advising clients with respect to FTC investigations, federal privacy regulations such as HIPAA, FCRA, TCPA and GLBA, as well as state laws governing personally identifiable information. For his clients, he also provides regulatory analysis, risk management, policy development, training and audits. Zach speaks and writes regularly on cutting-edge data privacy and cybersecurity issues and is a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) as well as a Certified Information Privacy Professional in the fields of United States and European Union laws and regulations (CIPP/US/E). The Dayton Business Journal named Zach a member of the 2018 Forty Under 40 class of emerging leaders and the Dayton Bar Association recognized him as a 2018 Rising Star of the Bar. He is an adjunct professor of cybersecurity law at Indiana University Maurer School of Law and Wright State University, where he earned the 2017 Excellence in Teaching Award for Adjunct Faculty. He is active in several legal and community organizations and serves as Legal Advisor for the Centerville High School Mock Trial Team. In 2018, Zach was inducted in the Centerville Education Foundation’s Hall of Fame for his ten years of service to the Centerville community. In 2021, Zach graduated the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Dayton program - the fourth oldest continuously operating community leadership program in the U.S.
